Ubuntu Version
Ubuntu Netbook Remix(UNR) or normal Ubuntu(desktop)
If you are wondering if you need Ubuntu Netbook Remix(UNR) or normal Ubuntu the answer should be easy. I highly recommend that you install Ubuntu on a normal laptop and stationary pc and UNR on smaller netbooks. Some might argue that desktop addition on netbook also works well.
32 bit vs 64 bit
32 bit works on all.
Generally new computers with dual core and 3 GB ram or more usually use 64 bit if supported of the hardware. Others 32 bit. Advanced users that only have 32 bit support can use a PAE kernel to use up to 64 GB ram.(was used in older enterprises, but they use 64 bit now). If you are uncertain you can google your computer and find out what architecture you have. 32 bit works on both and 64 bit only on 64 bit.
Derivatives:
Ubuntu has many derivatives like edubuntu, kubuntu.. etc..
This is a question about what you want and the name often reveals its useful area. These derivatives is usually not altered much, mostly just uses different default programs.
Edubuntu – kids/students/teachers – preinstalled with educational programs
Kubuntu – More fancy model of Ubuntu. Uses a different menus and menu bars. (KDE)
Both mentioned above and normal Ubuntu uses the same Sofware Center and can be customized to be almost equal with an Internet connection. And help for all of them can be provided in both Ubuntu forums and their own respective forums and of course everywhere online.
