hi again. so it has come to the time i have been dreading, my beloved 9.04 jaunty has passed its support date. I don`t want to upgrade but feel that i should at least have a look at these young upstarts to see if they are as good as people say. I tried 9.10 when it was 1st released & had lots of kernel crash`s. If I am going to update is it worthwhile trying 9.10 again that is supported for another 6 months or should I bite the bullet & go for 10.04 lucid ?
My main worry is stability, my computer is used by the family who just want to switch it on then point & click the mouse. Also there is so much stuff that won`t get used in the newer versions is it possible to uninstall apps without screwing up other apps that have shared dependencies ? or is it better to go for one of the “lite” versions & add the apps I need
If you have a family shared computer i recommend going with 10.04. Since it is an RC meaning it is supported for 3 years. If you have a lot of stuff on your computer it might be a good idea to upgrade to karmic and then directly upgrading to lucid. But to backup the files and reinstall the entire system and get a fresh start on things, is often very under estimated and might be beneficial. It’s a matter of taste, but id say its the most stable way. The LTS 10.04 is a great improvement and a good long term release. 10.10 is coming in a few weeks, but it’s not supportet for the same time intervall. Im always helping at the ubuntu facebook group and the amount of questions and help me’s dropped drastically when 10.04 was released. If you post what computer you have and what parts i can do a quick lookup for you but you should be fine.
went for the fresh install & it was the easiest since i started using 8.04. almost every thing worked “out of the box” only needed to get apps for mp3, & load adobe & java. Deep Joy!!!
Then i read your blog & agree with all you say.
What`s your thoughts on downloading the iso image from Canonical or as a shared torrent from someone like btjunkie? I would like to show loyalty to Canonical when ever possible but previous downloads have taken at least 4.5 hours against just over a hour as a shared torrent.

Ubuntu is in fact providing bandwidth for everyone and its quite expensive. If you download from somewhere else you are not in any way damaging canonical. Download the official torrent and seed to a ratio above 1 is the most fair way. Then your bandwidth usage is exactly zero. if you keep seeding after 1 share ratio you are contributing to ubuntu. It’s not to difficult to contribute with something. And giving something back is a good feeling.

I have put tjhis on FB but hope you can help
booted up then ‘screen graphic card & input device setting could not be detected correctly. You will to configure these yourself.’ pressed ok & got a menu with 5 or 6 options but none did anything.
Tried the next option at boot up screen (2.6.32-21) low graphics screen then blank screen
Googled low graphics message & it seems this is wide spread but cant find an answer, can any of you gurus help (keep it simple)

Okay first i need to know what graphics card you have. Because all graphic cards use different drivers.
——
some general common issues and tips:
Note: do not install drivers from the products website, they are not correctly configured.
Did you install hardware drivers in system-> administration -> hardware drivers ?
If you have a unsupported ATI it looks like the drivers might be supported for maveric meerkat final or RC, which is released 10.10.10
I did not find any hits on the error message: “screen graphic card & input device setting could not be detected correctly. You will to configure these yourself.” I assume you meant “Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself”

Hi, I am now dual booting 9.04 & 10.04, if I have any more probs I will make sure I have all the info you have asked for.
I have no extra drivers installed & never had or needed any, I do have an ATI card (radion I think) but if it was a faulty driver it would have shown up before wouldn`t it??
Sorry for misleading you with incorrect error message, & good guess .
I noticed that jaunty is ext3 but lucid is ext4, I never noticed an option on what level ext to use & does it matter???
By: thomoturk on September 27, 2010 at 20:28
ext4 vs ext3 doesn’t matter. But the ext4 that follows older cd images like karmic and so on is to old and beta stage ish. From Lucid and so on ext4 is great.

How do i get firefox online because right now it is offline
Fist to find out the command goto, System -> preferences -> main menu
Find the program you need the command for -> properties
copy the command. in this case “ooffice -impress %F”(without quotes)
Then go to System -> preferences -> keyboard shortcuts
click “add”
Choose shortcut and paste the command ;)
Its also possible to drag the icon from the main menu to your panel.

I always do a fresh install, but you have to find out what is the right solution for you. Here is a more detailed post where i have reflected upon the subject. http://ubuntuper.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/fresh-install-vs-upgrade-benefits-and-negatives-with-both/

tip: if you go for a fresh install. get the 10.04.1 package. it is 10.04 with most of the updates preinstalled. It will save you some time.
